Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is a city in Cambodia, located in the elevated peninsula in the southwest of the Gulf of Thailand. The city is home of many beaches along its coastline which makes it a premier seaside resort area. It is also a national center for trade, transport and commerce.
To get out adventure started let’s begin talking about the amazing Buddhist temples you can find in the city. They are a must when visiting Cambodia and Sihanoukville. The temples are very stylistically diverse, and you may find since green-tinged stone to colorful pointed roofs. One of the main ones in the city is the Wat Leu, featuring a three headed carved elephant and a huge black statue of Buddha. It is very religious significant and intriguing in its architecture. It is very representative of the country’s spiritual culture, so you cannot not see it.
I guess this one of the parts that everyone is waiting for and most excited about when visiting Sihanoukville; the beaches! The city does not have a reputation of premier seaside resort for nothing, it is home of many white powdery sand beaches, and amazing views of Thailand’s gulf. The most famous ones are the Otres, Ochheuteal and Serendipity, all of them offering beach bars so you relax in the while having a cocktail.
Of course where there are beautiful beaches, there are also many water sports! Most of the beaches offer snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, and even kitesurfing. The corals and sea creatures lurking around Sihanoukville’s depths are amazing, and snorkeling or scuba diving – if you are more experienced – are a great way to experience the mysteries of the city’s ocean. You are going to have a super thrilling day by the beach with all of this!
Who does not like food? We all do, and sometimes you go to different countries only to have a taste of their cuisine, love it, and then have no idea of how to make it again. That’s why I highly recommend to take the Khmer cookery class in the city. It is an essential activity for any foodie! You will have an experienced chef giving instructions, and use authentic fresh local ingredients. It is a great way to spend you day if you love food, given the fact to you will taste a lot of yummy dishes and then be able to replicate it at home!
On the next day, to relax from an entire day of many delicious foods, go to the Kbal Chhay Waterfall, it is located just 7km from the center of Sihanoukville and you will be amazed by the serene natural spot surrounded by tall green trees and a spectacular strong flow waterfall.
The city’s landmark is not hard to miss, a Golden Lion Roundabout coated in yellow fold paint sporting facial scary expressions and unrealistic proportions! Make sure to visit and take some pictures! It is also a great point to stop at a bar or a restaurant in the city.
Last but not least, don’t forget to take a Buggy Tour around town, it is a fantastic way to get to know your surrounding areas and have an adventure! Some of the tracks will be muddy so the tour will make for a dirty adventure. You will be able to visit local villages and the countryside to learn more about the local culture. Definitely a must when visiting.
